SAP Consultant Salary in India: Module-Wise, Fresher to Lead

SAP consulting has a salary range that looks confusing until you understand that module specialisation matters more here than in almost any other tech role. An SAP FICO consultant with eight years of experience and S/4HANA exposure earns significantly more than an SAP MM consultant with the same years doing routine support work. Same title, same experience, different trajectory.

The average across all modules and all experience levels is around ₹7.6 to 8.5 LPA on AmbitionBox, Glassdoor, and Indeed. The 90th percentile on Glassdoor is ₹18.45 LPA. That is a wide range. What sits in the middle depends on which module you are in, how senior you are, and which company you work for.

The Numbers by Experience Level

Fresher (0 to 1 year): ₹3.5 to 6 LPA. The Glassdoor average for SAP freshers sits at ₹4.2 LPA. At IT services companies like Capgemini and Infosys, freshers start at ₹2 to 4 LPA. At mid-tier consulting and product companies, ₹4 to 6 LPA. Freshers who enter with a recognised SAP certification and some functional domain knowledge land at the higher end.

Junior consultant (1 to 4 years): ₹5 to 9 LPA at IT services companies. ₹7 to 12 LPA at consulting firms. At this stage, the most important variable is not years but whether you have moved from support work to implementation project experience.

Mid-level (5 to 8 years): ₹10 to 18 LPA at IT services and mid-tier consulting. ₹12 to 22 LPA at top consulting firms like Accenture and IBM. ₹18 to 28 LPA at companies running in-house SAP with senior functional ownership. The 6figr data for in-house SAP roles shows an average of ₹21.3 LPA, which reflects the premium companies pay for experienced SAP talent who owns their own system rather than delivering for a client.

Senior consultant (8 to 12 years): ₹18 to 28 LPA at IT services and consulting. Top earners at the 90th percentile on Glassdoor reach ₹26.95 LPA. At companies where you are leading S/4HANA migrations or managing a large SAP implementation, senior consultants earn ₹25 to 38 LPA.

Lead and SAP architect (12 or more years): ₹30 to 55 LPA and above. Lead SAP FICO consultants on Glassdoor report ₹15 to 55 LPA depending on company. SAP Basis consultants at architect level earn ₹28 to 50 LPA. Principal-level SAP roles at large enterprises and top consulting firms push above ₹50 LPA.

Module Makes a Bigger Difference Than Experience

This is the most important thing to understand about SAP consulting compensation. Two consultants with identical years of experience in different modules are not earning the same salary.

SAP FICO (Financial Accounting and Controlling) is consistently the highest-paying module by volume and demand. It has the most open roles of any SAP module in India. Fresher FICO consultants earn ₹4.5 to 6.5 LPA. Mid-level earns ₹8 to 15 LPA. Senior earns ₹18 to 25 LPA. FICO consultants who add S/4HANA Finance experience or cross-module knowledge (SD or MM integration) sit at the top of the range.

SAP ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is the development module. ABAP consultants who can customise SAP are consistently in demand because every client implementation requires development work. Fresher ABAP developers earn around ₹7.27 LPA average per AmbitionBox. Mid-level earns ₹10 to 18 LPA. Senior earns ₹18 to 28 LPA. ABAP consultants who add Fiori, OData, and S/4HANA extension development earn a premium over those doing only classic ABAP.

SAP SD (Sales and Distribution) is the third strongest module on salary. Fresher SD consultants earn ₹3.5 to 6 LPA. Mid-level earns ₹8 to 15 LPA. Senior earns ₹18 to 24 LPA. SD consultants with integration knowledge (connecting SD to FI, MM, and logistics) earn more than those focused only on core SD configuration.

SAP MM (Materials Management) covers procurement and inventory. Fresher MM consultants earn ₹3.5 to 5.5 LPA. Mid-level earns ₹6 to 14 LPA. Senior earns ₹16 to 28 LPA for consultants with Ariba and S/4HANA Procurement experience. AmbitionBox shows SAP MM averaging ₹5.6 LPA across all levels, which reflects the larger volume of support and maintenance roles at the lower end.

SAP Basis is infrastructure management for SAP environments: installation, upgrades, performance tuning, and security. Basis consultants earn ₹13 to 30 LPA across mid to senior levels. It is a smaller market than FICO or MM but consistent demand because every SAP landscape needs Basis support.

SAP HCM (Human Capital Management) with SuccessFactors is the growing segment. Traditional HCM consultants earn ₹8 to 14 LPA at mid level. SuccessFactors consultants with cloud implementation experience earn ₹14 to 22 LPA at senior level because cloud HCM implementations are replacing on-premise systems at many large companies.

Company Type and What It Pays

IT services companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCLTech, LTIMindtree) employ the largest number of SAP consultants in India. Glassdoor shows TCS, Infosys, and Capgemini all in the ₹5 to 12 LPA median band for SAP consultant roles. IBM runs slightly higher at ₹5 to 12 LPA with an ₹8 LPA median. These are client delivery environments: you work on SAP implementation and support projects for clients.

Big Four and top consulting firms (Deloitte, EY, Accenture, PwC, KPMG) pay higher. Accenture runs ₹5 to 11 LPA median for SAP consultants overall. Senior consultants at Deloitte and EY on complex S/4HANA migration projects earn ₹22 to 38 LPA.

In-house SAP roles at large enterprises and GCCs pay the most per the 6figr data, averaging ₹21.3 LPA. Companies that own and operate their own SAP landscape need experienced consultants who understand the business deeply. These roles come with more stability and higher pay than client delivery positions.

The S/4HANA Premium Is Real

SAP has been migrating companies from legacy ECC systems to S/4HANA for several years. That migration wave created a shortage of consultants who know S/4HANA well.

Consultants with S/4HANA implementation experience earn 25 to 40% more than consultants with only ECC experience at the same module and seniority level. If you are an experienced SAP consultant on ECC who has not built S/4HANA skills yet, that is the highest-leverage investment you can make in your salary.

SAP certification in your module plus S/4HANA is the combination that consistently shows up at the top of salary ranges for each module.

City Differences

Bengaluru pays the most for SAP roles. Senior SAP consultants at top consulting firms in Bengaluru earn ₹22 to 40 LPA. Mid-level earns ₹12 to 22 LPA.

Delhi NCR (Gurugram and Noida) is strong for SAP roles because of the concentration of large enterprise head offices and consulting firm delivery centres. Mid-level earns ₹10 to 18 LPA.

Mumbai is relevant for BFSI SAP roles, particularly FICO. Mid-level FICO consultants at banking and insurance companies earn ₹12 to 20 LPA.

Hyderabad has a growing SAP market driven by GCC presence. Mid-level earns ₹10 to 18 LPA.

Pune and Chennai are below Bengaluru but active markets for IT services SAP delivery roles.

What SAP Consultant Interviews Test

SAP interviews at IT services companies test configuration knowledge in your module, functional understanding of the business process your module covers, and integration awareness (how does FICO connect to SD or MM in a typical landscape).

At consulting firms and in-house roles, the bar goes higher: you are expected to discuss project experience at depth, handle business scenario questions (a client's month-end close is running slow, walk me through your diagnostic approach), and demonstrate that you can work with business stakeholders, not just configure screens.

The communication part is where most candidates underperform. Being able to explain an SAP configuration decision clearly to a functional consultant or a business user is a skill that improves with practice under interview conditions.

At Intervue.io, SAP consultant mock interviews are one-on-one with experienced SAP professionals who give you specific feedback on your module knowledge, your scenario handling, and how clearly you communicate your approach.
