IBM India starts most freshers at ₹4.5–8 LPA as Associate System Engineers in IBM Consulting. IBM Software Labs pays freshers more. From there, your band sets the pay: roughly ₹10–20 LPA at 7A, ₹16–32 LPA at 7B, and somewhere between ₹25 LPA and ₹55 LPA once you reach Band 8.

How IBM Bands Work
Every IBM employee sits in a numbered band. Graduates join at 6G, and the ladder climbs through 6A, 6B, 7A, 7B, 8 and 9, with executive bands (A to E) above that. Titles at IBM change a lot and mean different things in different units, so when people inside IBM talk about pay, they talk about band.
IBM doesn't publish what each band pays. Everything in this article comes from employee reports, and the bands overlap heavily. Some hiring managers even give a 7A or 7B to a candidate with fewer years, simply because that's the only way to meet their salary ask.
Promotions are slow at the bottom. Expect 2–4 years in 6A before 6B, and another 4–6 before 7A if you stay internal. Switching in from outside is usually the faster route to Band 7.

IBM Software Labs vs IBM Consulting
Same band, very different pay. IBM India Software Labs (ISL) builds IBM's own software products and pays closer to a product company. IBM Consulting and the Client Innovation Centres work on client projects and pay in line with Indian IT services firms.

Those averages come from Levels.fyi software engineer submissions for IBM India, which lean heavily toward ISL. Compare a Band 7 average of about ₹30 LPA there with the ₹10–32 LPA spread across 7A and 7B in Consulting. If you're choosing between two IBM teams, the business unit matters as much as the band.
IBM Salary for Experienced Professionals
Say you have 9 years of experience and IBM offers you 7A. Employees on Fishbowl put the 7A ceiling in Consulting at around ₹20 LPA, and 7B at about ₹32 LPA. Take the 7A and you could hit the top of your band within a year or two, with the next promotion still several years away.

ISL pays above these ranges. One engineer reported a 7B offer at ₹41 LPA fixed plus a ₹4 lakh joining bonus.
The interview changes shape as the band goes up. A 6B loop is mostly coding plus a walkthrough of your current project. For 7A, interviewers want to hear how you designed a module and how you've guided two or three engineers. From 7B upward, the design round carries the decision. You'll be asked about scale, failure handling and the trade-offs you made, and a fuzzy answer there is the most common reason a 7B candidate gets a 7A offer.
A few things that help at the offer stage. Get the band number in writing, since 7A and 7B offers can carry the same title. If you have 8 or more years, treat 7B as your floor. And bring a competing offer if you have one. IBM often matches, especially for cloud, AI, SAP and security profiles.

Start at ibm.com/careers. Search for "Associate System Engineer" or "entry level", set the location to India, and apply to every drive that matches your degree. New roles appear through the year, so check back every few weeks. If IBM visits your campus, the placement cell route is faster.

On a ₹4.5 LPA ASE offer, you'll take home about ₹33,000 a month after PF and professional tax. There's no income tax at that level under the new regime. A ₹8 LPA offer works out to roughly ₹58,000.
The IBM fresher selection process

- Online assessment with cognitive games, numerical series and an English section.
- Coding test, usually one or two problems.
- Technical interview on core CS, one language, SQL and your projects.
- HR round covering relocation, shifts and why IBM.
The cognitive games catch a lot of people. They're timed, they look nothing like a normal aptitude paper, and you can't pause them. Do a few practice sets the week before.
In the technical round, expect to open your own project code and explain it line by line. Interviewers at IBM like candidates who know one language properly, Java or Python usually, and can say why they built something the way they did.
