At Google the interview decides your level, and the level decides your pay: an L4 offer is worth about ₹75 LPA, an L5 offer about ₹1.16 crore. Whether you are a new grad or a senior engineer chasing L5 or L6, rehearse the Google loop with a FAANG interviewer on Intervue first.

Google pays software engineers in India from about ₹32–45 LPA at L3 (new grad) to ₹2.19 crore at L6 (Staff) and ₹3.24 crore at L7 (Senior Staff), in total yearly pay. Roughly half of senior pay comes as Google stock, so the level you are hired at matters far more than the base salary.

Level | Title | Total pay / year
L3 | SWE II | ₹32–45 LPA
L4 | SWE III | ₹75 LPA
L5 | Senior SWE | ₹1.16 Cr
L6 | Staff SWE | ₹2.19 Cr

Google Salary by Level: L3 to L7 (Base, Stock and Bonus)
A Google offer has three parts: base salary paid monthly, stock (GSUs) that vests over 4 years, and a yearly bonus of about 15% of base at L3–L5 and more at Staff level. Average yearly values for software engineers in Bengaluru, in ₹ lakh:
[
]
Level | Base | Stock | Bonus | Total
L3 | 25.3 | 13.3 | 2.0 | 40.7
L4 | 42.4 | 28.2 | 4.6 | 75.2
L5 | 62.6 | 46.7 | 6.5 | 115.8
L6 | 99.2 | 101.0 | 18.5 | 218.7

What a Google salary looks like per month
An L3 engineer's ₹25.3 LPA base works out to about ₹1.7 lakh a month in hand, after PF and income tax under the new regime. Stock vests on top of that, and the bonus is paid once a year.
How Google stock (GSUs) works
- New hires get a dollar-valued grant that vests over 4 years, often weighted toward the early years.
- Strong performers get yearly refresh grants, so stock income at L5 and above usually grows even without a promotion.
- Because GSUs are priced in dollars, a weaker rupee or a higher Alphabet share price raises your rupee pay.
Google L6 Salary in India (Staff Software Engineer)
A Google L6 (Staff Software Engineer) in India earns about ₹2.19 crore a year on average: roughly ₹99 LPA base, ₹1 crore in stock and ₹18.5 LPA bonus. L6 is the first level where stock is as large as base pay. You are judged on impact across several teams, not just your own code.
- Experience: usually 8–12+ years, often with a prior Staff or Principal title
- Scope: sets technical direction for a product area and mentors L4–L5 engineers
- Interview: coding rounds, 2 system design rounds at a high bar, and a leadership round
- Common outcome: many L6 candidates are offered L5 instead, which costs about ₹1 crore a year
At L5 and L6, the system design rounds decide your level, and your level decides crores. Practise a Google-style system design round with a senior FAANG engineer →
Google Salary for Experienced Engineers: How Leveling Works
Most engineers who join Google India mid-career come in at L4 or L5. Google sets your level from your interview performance, not your current title. A hiring committee reads every interviewer's write-up and decides the level before pay is discussed.
[
]
Experience | Target level | Total pay
2–5 yrs | L4 | ₹75 LPA
5–9 yrs | L5 | ₹1.16 Cr
8–12+ yrs | L6 | ₹2.19 Cr
12+ yrs | L7 | ₹3.24 Cr
[
]
What decides each level:
- L4: clean, fast coding with clear communication across 4 rounds
- L5: a strong system design round on top of coding, plus ownership stories
- L6: two strong design rounds and proof of cross-team technical leadership
- L7: org-level technical strategy, usually through referrals or direct sourcing
How experienced candidates avoid being down-levelled:
- Treat system design as the main event. At L5 and above, a weak design round is the most common reason for a lower-level offer.
- Tell scope stories with numbers: traffic, latency, team size, money saved. Interviewers write these down for the hiring committee.
- Negotiate stock, not base. Base bands are narrow; the stock grant and sign-on bonus have the most room, especially with a competing offer.
- Ask for a re-level review if your experience clearly fits the next level. It is rare, but recruiters can take new evidence back to the committee.

Google fresher interview process
- Resume screen and online assessment: usually 2 coding problems
- Technical phone screen: one 45-minute coding interview in a shared doc
- Onsite loop: 3–4 coding interviews plus a Googleyness and leadership round
- Hiring committee: reviews all feedback and decides hire or no-hire
- Team matching and offer
How to prepare as a fresher
- Solve problems across arrays, graphs, trees and dynamic programming, and explain your approach out loud. Google scores communication as well as code.
- Practise writing code without autocomplete; Google uses a plain shared editor.
- Take 2–3 mock interviews before your onsite. Most rejections come from pressure and communication, not from unseen problems.
